How to track a SPEI transfer

Tracking a SPEI transfer means confirming with the CEP whether the money moved. If it doesn't arrive, the first step is asking whoever paid you for the tracking key.

What you need to track

SPEI has no tracking number like a package: there's no page that shows the transfer in transit. What exists is the CEP, the document Banxico publishes once the payment has settled.

To request it you need the tracking key, the payment date, the sending bank, the receiving bank, the beneficiary account and the amount. Whoever paid you has those details, and without them Banxico's form finds nothing.

NoteYour bank can deduct the money before the CEP exists: it gets published once the payment settles, not when it's charged.

How to verify the status

Verifying a SPEI transfer means requesting the CEP with the payment details. Here are the steps.

  1. Ask whoever paid you for the tracking key, the date and the amount.
  2. Go to banxico.org.mx/cep and enter those details.
  3. If the CEP appears, it has the date, the amount and the banks.
  4. If it doesn't appear, check the operation's status on MI-SPEI.

Official sourceThe Banxico site for requesting the CEP is open from 9:30 to 23:00, every day; MI-SPEI needs an account at a participating bank.

With VerikoWith a photo of the receipt, the lookup repeats on its own. When the CEP appears, you are notified that the payment was confirmed.

If the transfer doesn't arrive

If the payment doesn't arrive when expected, the first step is the same: ask for the tracking key and look up the CEP. If the CEP exists, the delay is in how your bank reflects it, not in the payment.

If the CEP doesn't exist, check the date: Banxico settles by business day, and a payment after 18:00 processes the next one. If a full business day has passed, contact your bank directly.

Important«Retenida» (held) or «rebotada» (bounced) aren't states Banxico publishes: the only public fact is whether the CEP exists. If your bank uses those words, ask what they mean in your case.

How Veriko does it

Veriko looks up the CEP with Banxico using the details on the receipt you were sent and tells you in about 10 seconds whether the money has moved, with the date, the amount and the banks the CEP states.

Tracking by hand means having the six exact details, typing them on Banxico's site within its hours and repeating it if the CEP is not published yet. With Veriko the lookup can retry on its own until the CEP appears, and it notifies you when the payment is confirmed.

If you receive payments every day, waiting for the balance to update or requesting the CEP one by one does not scale. There is a free plan that never expires to try it, and the pricing page compares the plans.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a transfer take to arrive at most?

Banxico doesn't publish an official maximum. If the CEP exists, the payment already settled even if your bank takes time to reflect it; if a full business day has passed with no CEP, ask your bank directly.

What happens if someone sends me money and it doesn't show up in my account?

Ask whoever paid you for the tracking key and look up the CEP at banxico.org.mx/cep. If it appears, the money already moved and the delay is on your bank's side, not the payment's.

How do I know if a transfer is on hold?

Banxico doesn't publish a «held» status: it only publishes the CEP once the payment has settled. If a business day has passed with no CEP, ask your bank directly why.

How do I know if a transfer bounced?

If a payment gets returned, it usually shows up as a new movement in your account, not as part of the original one. Check the movement detail in your online banking, and compare the date with the one it was sent.

How do I check the status of a SPEI?

MI-SPEI is Banxico's tool for anyone with an account at a participating bank, and it shows the operation's status. If you don't have access, the CEP at banxico.org.mx/cep needs no account or password and proves the same thing: that the payment settled.

How do I recover a SPEI transfer?

This guide can't promise that: it depends on the case. If the payment went to the wrong account or there's suspected fraud, your bank is the first contact — it's the one that can start a dispute.
