Tracking key of a transfer

The tracking key is the code Banxico uses to identify your SPEI transfer. Each bank shows it differently on the receipt, but it serves the same purpose: requesting the CEP.

What the tracking key is

It's the code Banxico uses to identify a SPEI transfer. Whoever sends the payment's bank assigns it, not the one receiving it.

It's not the same as the CLABE: the CLABE identifies an account and doesn't change; the tracking key identifies a movement and is different on every transfer.

Your bank generates it the moment you send the payment, before Banxico receives it. That's why it always appears on your receipt, even before you have the CEP.

NoteIt's also called a «código de rastreo». It's not a secret, but it identifies one specific payment: sharing it only lets someone look up that CEP.

Where it is on your receipt

Each bank puts it in a different place on the receipt, almost always in the movement detail. The format also changes from bank to bank.

The five-digit codes for each SPEI institution are in the bank directory. The tracking key is a different piece of data, inside the receipt itself.

Banxico doesn't require a single format: each institution designs its own key, always within the system's rules. That's why a bank can change it without it being an error.

ImportantThese are the patterns we've confirmed against real receipts; every other bank uses its own format, and any of them can change it without notice.

How to request the CEP

With the tracking key, the date and the amount you can request the CEP at banxico.org.mx/cep. It's how you confirm the payment settled.

  1. Copy the tracking key exactly as it appears, without extra spaces.
  2. Go to banxico.org.mx/cep.
  3. Enter the key along with the date, the banks and the amount.
  4. If the CEP appears, the payment settled.

Official sourceThe Banxico site for requesting the CEP is open from 9:30 to 23:00, every day.

With VerikoThe key is read straight from the photo of the receipt, without copying it by hand, and its format is checked to match the bank that issued it.

How Veriko does it

Veriko reads the tracking key and the other details straight from the photo or the PDF, and looks up the CEP with Banxico to give you the verdict in about 10 seconds, without you copying anything by hand.

The key is where manual entry fails most: up to 30 characters, different for every bank, with letters and digits that look alike. One character copied wrong and the CEP does not appear. Veriko reads it as printed and, if the format does not match the bank that issued it, flags it.

If you validate payments every day, copying keys by hand is the step that fails most. There is a free plan that never expires to try it, and the pricing page compares the plans.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check a «CLABE de rastreo»?

«CLABE de rastreo» mixes up two different things: the CLABE identifies an account and has 18 digits; the tracking key identifies a payment and its format varies by bank. To track a payment you need the second one.

What's the tracking key on a BBVA transfer?

At BBVA, the key usually starts with «MBAN01». It appears in the movement detail, inside the app or online banking.

Where does a transfer's tracking key appear?

It's in the movement detail, inside your online banking or your bank's app. The name can vary: some banks call it a «reference» or «folio», even though it means the same thing.

What can someone do with a tracking key?

With it, someone can request the CEP for that one specific payment on the Banxico site. It doesn't give access to your account or your other movements.

How do I get my tracking key?

You don't generate it: your bank gives it to you on the receipt or in the movement detail as soon as you send the payment. There's no separate process for requesting one, and no page generates it.

Is it safe to share my tracking key?

Sharing it with whoever needs to confirm the payment is safe: it only lets someone look up that one CEP, and doesn't give access to your account. Avoid posting it somewhere anyone can see it.
